employees of the retail giant are threatening to strike on black friday, one of the busiest shopping days of the year. and new life for the twinkie. days after it looked like hostess would be shutting down and its treats taken off the market, the iconic bakery gets one last shot at survival. captioning funded by cbs good morning, everybody. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. this morning efforts for a cease fire between israel and hamas are picking up, but so far no results. hillary clinton is on her way for a meeting with prime minister benjamin netanyahu tomorrow. clinton will also meet with palestinian leaders in gaza before heading to cairo. today, the seventh day of hostilities, israeli aircraft hit a hamas center as more rockets rain down on israel.

susan mcginnis is following it all. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the white house says secretary clinton will not meet with hamas while she's in the region. for now, the head of the u.n. is trying to get both sides to hold their fire without success. mosques in gaza issued the prayer for morning prayers today, even as bombs and missiles rained down around them. the israeli military says it hit about 100 terror sites overnight, including the islamic national bank in gaza city that israel says is used to fund terror operations. hamas militants have launched more than a thousand rockets into israel during this week-long battle. palestinian officials say 38 more people were killed monday, including women and children. israel says it's trying to minimize civilian casualties. >> the problem is the terrorists are hiding these rocket launchers deep inside civilian

areas and mosques and schools and people's homes, firing them at our civilians. it's very hard to get to this equipment, but it's necessary. >> reporter: president obama is sending secretary of state hillary clinton to israel to help with cease fire negotiations. she'll arrive today and meet with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu tomorrow. >> the bottom line is it has to be an end to rocket fire that threatens israel. >> reporter: the political leader of hamas told reporters in cairo hamas will not stop launching rockets until israel stops its bombing campaign and ends the blockade of gaza. he also said israel is bluffing and won't send troops into gaza. israeli officials say that's no bluff. now, as for the prospects of a ground invasion on the part of israel, president obama said he is not asking israel to hold off on that. he says israel has the right to make its own security decisions. >> susan, thank you so much.

as we reported, egyptian officials are at the center of the truce talks. clarissa ward is there this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. >> these talks seem to be as an impasse. what's the latest on the ground this morning? >> reporter: well, egyptian officials have been saying that they believe that some kind of a truce agreement may be imminent, that there were "encouraging signs from both sides," but certainly after speaking to a source close to the hamas delegation here, it seems like there are some major sticking points, primarily hamas is demanding an end to the israeli blockade of the gaza strip. now, that seems very unlikely that the israelis would accept that because of the fear that lifting that blockade would result in an influx of weapons into gaza that could get into the hands of militants. >> we know this morning now that hillary clinton, secretary of state, heading to that region for those talks.

what impact can she have? >> reporter: well, obviously secretary clinton is very experienced dealing with problems in this part of the world. she knows all the major plays. she's likely to have the greatest influence obviously on israel, because the u.s. does not deal directly with hamas, but essentially she'll be joining a chorus of regional leaders in trying to apply intense diplomatic pressure to get both sides to step back from the brink before it's too late. >> reporter: khalid is the group's political leader, i know you had a chance to talk to him directly yesterday. you asked him does hamas want pease with -- peace with israel? what did he say? >> reporter: well, he didn't really answer the question directly. he began by giving a message to the american people, that the american people need to wake up and stop supporting israel and

stand instead in support of 350 million arabs. and then he said that essentially he sees the palestinians as the victims in this situation and the israelis as the aggressors. so in his mind, it is up to the israelis to sort of reach out to make the first step towards putting down their weapons and establishing some kind of a pac -- peace. >> clarissa, thank you so much for the update. meanwhile, four men in california have been arrested in a terrorist plot. federal officials say the men arranged to join al qaeda and the taliban. they allegedly plans to kill americans at home and in afghanistan by bombing government buildings. if convicted, they could face up to 15 years in prison. in washington, republicans are digging in their heels over the possible nomination of susan rice to be the next secretary of state. 97 house republicans signed a letter to president obama saying rice misled the nation about the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. rice has been criticized for saying shortly after attack that it did not appear to be an act

of terrorism. president obama wraps up his trip to southeast asia. his last stop was cambodia. he attended a summit of regional leaders and in a private meeting expressed his concern over human rights issues in cambodia. wet weather is forecast to continue through the week in the pacific northwest. heavy rain and wind is causing extensive damage in washington and oregon. there is widespread flooding and wind damage. the storm has killed at least two people and 20,000 customers lost power. seattle is expected to get five inches of rain over the next few days. >> all of a sudden you just slam into a horrible lake in the road. >> this flooding started coming in the door a couple hours ago and now we're just trying to get things up and away out of the water. >> wind gusts in the mountains topped 100 miles per hour. indianapolis police are now investigating that powerful house explosion as a possible

homicide. the november 10th blast destroyed dozens of homes and killed two people. officials believe natural gas was involved. search warrants have been issued and investigators are looking for a white van that was seen in the neighborhood. the friday after thanksgiving is one of the busiest shopping days of the year, but this year unhappy walmart employees plan to strike. ben tracey reports. >> reporter: dozens of walmart workers protested outside this store near washington, d.c. today. >> we want a living wage. we want to be respected on our job. >> reporter: hundreds of similar pickets are planned across the country. >> this is not a fun experience anymore, no. >> reporter: dan has worked at this walmart near los angeles for four years. the former employee of the month makes $9.80 an hour. >> reporter: are you scheduled to work on black friday? >> i am. >> reporter: do you plan to work on black friday? >> i do not. >> reporter: how come?

>> walmart needs to know that it's not fair how they treat us. >> reporter: they want minimum hourly pay raised to $13, less costly health care. next year their insurance premiums will jump by as much as 36% as walmart scales back its contribution. >> we don't want to walk out on black friday. it's just something we have to do because it's the right thing to do. >> reporter: he says his schedule was cut to 15 hours per week when he joined a group of walmart employees who favor unionizing. he lost custody of his 4-year-old son when he could no longer support him. >> so i lost my son and i'm kind of regretting working for walmart, but i have to provide. it's biggest retailer in the world and you can't help me provide for my son? it tears me apart big-time. >> reporter: walmart tried to head off large-scale protests with a complaint to the national labor relations board. company says the demonstrations are being orchestrated by outside unions. david tobar is the walmart vice president. >> i think this is just another union publicity stunt and the

>> why can't you just cut your way out of the deficit? >> for sure, certain people in this country wouldn't like the society you would have if you did that, and personally, i don't think i would like it either if we went as far as to close our entire budget deficit in that way. >> what kind of society would bit? >> i think it would be one where the safety net would be more porous and lower to the ground. >> blankfein added that people should lower their expectations on entitlements such as medicare and social security. today the commerce department releases data on housing starts. on monday, the national association of realtors said sales of previously occupied homes was up 2.1% in october. and with more homes going off the market, prices are being pushed higher. the shelf life of hostess and its array of treats is getting extended. the company and its unionized bakers will go through private mediation in hopes of avoiding liquidation. that means hostess will not go

handcuffs after allegedly making a threatening comment. police say the plane had just left the gate at laguardia airport on monday when the manmade the remark. the flight was delayed about an hour. the man has been charged with making a terroristic threat and falsely reporting an incident. an independent panel wants to take the stigma out of getting tested for the aids virus. they say all americans from the ages of 15 to 64 should get tested at least once, not just people considered at high risk for the virus. the panel also recommends pregnant women should get tested. currently over one million americans are living with hiv, but nearly one in five don't even know it. a dog could hold the key to helping the 200,000 people in the u.s. living with a spinal cord injury. this is jasper, a 10-year-old dachshund. his back legs were paralyzed after being hit by a car. scientists took some cells from his nose and implanted them into his spine and six months later, he could walk again. wow. researchers say while this is

while advances in medicine happen every day, there's a doctor in illinois who is being celebrated for keeping things the same more or less. for nearly 60 yeas.

dean reynolds pays a visit. >> reporter: just off the town square of rushville, illinois, population 3,300, is the office of doctor russell donor. age 87. >> i came here in 1955, i believe it was. there was a doctor that was here by himself, and so i came here. except all of a sudden he left. >> reporter: dr. donor charged $2 a visit then. >> you need some medicine, don't you? >> reporter: he pushed it up to $3 in the '60s, and to deal with inflation, raised it to $5 a few decades later and left it there. most of his income comes from his share in a family farm. do you ever dig into your own pocket to help people who need medical care? >> oh yes, occasionally. you know, be sure to take care

of whatever comes. always have anyway. >> reporter: his office is cluttered. patients wait their turn. there are no appointments. there are no computers either. no copiers. but lots of cards. rotary phones. and his two 80-something assistants, edie and rose. many of the doctor's patients are unemployed and have no health insurance, but that's not a problem when they sprain an ankle or step on a nail, like sue did. >> oh, we love him here. we don't know what we'd do without him. you get the best service. this man knows what he's doing. >> reporter: he still makes house calls. still makes his rounds at the local hospital. when was the last time you took some time off? >> i really don't remember. if there's something that i can do for people, that's what i'm here for. >> reporter: is that your sort of philosophy of life? >> it's always been the way it was.
